The final category is for those that have been reviewed but no final decision has been made (we may want additional readers or some time to consider it further) or for which a decision has been made but the author notification has not been sent out.

For the week ending 25 January 2008, we reviewed:

51 poems and accepted 4

9 short stories and accepted 1

6 nonfiction items and accepted 0

Our acceptance ratios since 1 January 2008 are:

Short Stories: 8%

Poetry: 5%

Nonfiction Articles: 0%

During the week ending 25 January 2008 we recieved 5 new electronic submissions and 12 mailed submissions.

The bad

Submissions intake is a mess right now. We receive submissions in two ways: e-mail and standard mail. The standard mail has been changed three times in the last three years. One of those addresses is not under our control and so we cannot guarantee forwarding.

For a time, e-mail submissions were received directly by an individual no longer with the company. Tracking of those submissions does not appear to be completely accurate.

And finally, in the split of Sofa Ink from Ink & Paper Group, hard copy data covering submission intake appears to have been lost.

What we are doing

We are going back through all the data and verifying we have good records on actions taken for everything we can identify having received. This includes contacting many authors again just to be safe.

We are also having to review a number of contracts and acceptance letters because after initially notifying the authors, some were not given contracts and others were not paid--though their stories and poetry have not been published yet. We have verified payment on every single story published.

We have developed a new submission tracking system and will be using it to stay current wiith new submissions as well as catch up on earlier submissions.

We had asked for time to the first of the year. Since that is now here, feel free to contact us by e-mail at acquistions@sofaink.com or write the address below. But please, we can do not have much of the original submission tracking information. It can take up to two weeks to respond to your request for an update. As you can imagine, many authors are now contacting us and the flood of valid requests still must be handled in the flow of regular work.
